acrylic painting

What is acrylic paint?

Acrylic painting is quite uncomplicated and versatile. Acrylic paint is opaque compared to watercolor paints. It has a high color brilliance and is waterproof after drying. This makes it particularly durable and long-lasting. Highly recommended for beginners as well as for painters in a hurry. The drying time of acrylic paint is very short - unlike oil paint. This has both advantages and disadvantages. The big advantage is that you can continue painting more quickly once a layer has dried. The disadvantage is that you have to be careful when painting to apply the paint quickly to the picture. The mixed color palette also dries very quickly.

Acrylic paint can also be processed with structural paste, sand or other things.

Quality

Acrylic paints are available in different qualities and in different price ranges. The higher the pigment content and the better the lightfastness, the more expensive the acrylic paints tend to be. If you are a beginner, you can use paints that have a good price-performance ratio to practice. Very cheap paints are also sufficient to start with.

painting techniques

  • Glazing technique: Here, a thin layer of paint is applied over a layer that has already dried. The lower layer still shows through.
  • Wet-on-wet technique: New layers of paint are applied to the still wet layer of paint. This can create soft or blended color transitions.
  • Spatula technique: This involves using spatulas or palette knives to apply thick layers of paint. This creates different structures and three-dimensionality.
  • Acrylic Pouring: This is a technique in which liquid acrylic paint is poured onto a painting surface. This quickly creates abstract works of art with interesting color gradients and patterns.
  • Impasto technique: Very thick layers of paint are applied directly to the canvas with a spatula or brush. This creates relief-like structures that give the picture a great deal of depth and plasticity.
